Learn to drive

I have been driving two wheeler for almost four years. Then I thought I should learn to drive a car.
I may also be planning to buy a car after some time.So I went to a driving school which is near to my home.
I didn't think for a long time and made a full payment within 30 minutes after listening to schedule and timings.
Here started my driving training  in city of Hyderabad, India and I am sharing my experiences here with you all.

Instructor gave  first three theory classes which were mostly about road symbols, signals , traffic rules etc.
I didn't find these classes of much practical use but definitely they were good for getting a learner license.

Then started simulator classes. They could have been more useful if there would have been one instructor to guide but that wasn't the case.
Sometimes I used to drive if I am playing a game .Simulator doesn't gives a real time experience though can be useful to learn
some standards procedures under the guidance of an instructor. And in 4 to 5 days , I finished my simulator classes.

I had a learner license and Now I was ready for  practical learning classes .

Day 1
I learned about gear positions, ABC -Accelerator brake clutch positions from right to left.
Would like to tell you that it  is an Indian car .So steering is located at right side of car unlike
left side as in US style cars.
Learned about foot positions on ABC.Right foot has to be placed in middle of Acclerator (Gas- thats what some people call it),
and brake.
Sitting posture should be alert and your foots can be comfortly placed over ABC.Seat has to be adjusted based on height of the person.
Seat belt should be taken except in case of reverse gear and should be loosened enough so that doesn't feels tight.
Clutch brake technique is very important for beginners because thats what will save them from accidents.Clutch brake technique is about stopping the vehicle.
Clutch should be applied first and then brake should be applied slowly or quickly depending on the situation  in order to save your car from hitting a stone , a wall , a person etc.
Now first thing a beginner is taught is starting the vehicle.
Before starting the engine just do a small check that hand brake is in applied state.Gear is in neutral position .Check the direction of front wheels(This should have been done before sitting inside car).Decide on what direction will you be moving while starting the car. This time we will do a normal start meaning car has to be moved in forward direction.Get in correct sitting posture.Take the seat belt.
Switch on the engine by moving the vehicle key knob to right below the steering after inserting the vehicle key.
Remember to give the right/ left turn signals if you are not just going straight. That would be different case and we are not talking about that.
Press your clutch , change to gear 1 ,release the hand brake ( assuming you are on flat road), slowly release the clutch , your vehicle will start moving after you reach the biting point while releasing clutch .Observe the difference in engine sound when your clutch position reaches biting position.
thats how your vehicle is started and you are at gear 1 .
Steering has to be controlled even though you have not learned it.
Your vehicle is at gear 1 and you can move at a speed of 10 in gear 1 .So change to gear 2 by pressing the clutch , shifting gear to 2 and releasing the clutch .
Car speed can be in the range from 10-20 in gear 2.Similarly , press little acclerator after your car reaches close to 30 change gear to 3 by pressing the clutch ,shifting gear to 3 and  releasing the clutch .Similarly press little gas after your car reaches close to 40 change gear to 4 by pressing the clutch , shifting gear to 4 and releasing the clutch .As being in learning stage we will not try to exceed 50.
Thats what was my learning in day 1.

As being a two wheeler rider, it was usual for me to observe the differences between two wheeler and four wheeler driving.
There is no reverse in two wheeler driving and there is no need for it because there is leg support and you can easily move your bike in backwards direction if you need it and there will be little need for this.
In two wheeler driving , balancing the bike is important but in case of four wheeler there is no need for it.
In two wheeler driving clutch and brake combination is rarely and very carefully used and that too at very low speeds otherwise vehicle will skid if clutch and brake combination used at high speeds. In two wheeler driving only brakes are applied while in speed not clutch. Clutch with brake is only used when the bike is almost to stop.
You can cut your two wheeler in almost every empty space of the road but that's not the case with four wheeler.
Offcourse there are differences   in size and shape of two wheeler and four wheeler , gear positions etc.

Day 2
Follow the traffic rules , lane position , left turn right turn signals, hazard light, crossroad signals.
Stopping the vehicle  includes bringing  the vehicle to right position in parking place , changing gear to neutral , applying the hand brake , removing the seat belt ,switching off the headlights ,closing the windows,  locking the car , taking the key out  , getting off the seat , closing the main window.
Steering movements are of two types. Hand to hand and push - pull method.
You might be using both the methods in a mixed way without noticing which one you are using.
Key to steering control is that you should try to keep your hands in quarter to 3 position so that your thumbs rest on middle rod  on steering wheel. You will develop your own way of controlling steer with experience.

Day 3
While taking a turn on curvy congested road, slow your speed , change gear to 2 or 1 based on traffic ahead of you, slowly control the steer and move.
You should have been  prepared  in advance e.g.  atleast 3 seconds before the situation.
Do not press the gas too hard while taking turn.It should not be pressed at all or may be little pressed gracefully.
Crossing the speed breaker normal ones is about  lowering the speed of your vehicle to second  gear , gently pressing and releasing  the brake before the speed breaker.
The sequence of doing this can be something like this .Assuming you are in gear 5 .So at an approx speed of 50 .You have a normal speed breaker ahead .Apply the club(clutch brake combo), release the brake quickly because you don't want to completely stop the vehicle , change your gear to 2 , release the clutch  , apply brake just before the speed breaker and release immediately.Your front tyre has crossed the speed breaker , your speed is low and by this time your rear tyre has also crossed the speed breaker. There can be little variations to this based on your driving style and the hardness of speed breaker.Like the one explained below.
Crossing the speed breaker hard ones is about  lowering the speed of your vehicle to first  gear and gently press and release  the brake before the speed breaker. You might require to little acclerate while taking the movement.
While driving on bad roads , you should drive in 2nd gear about at a speed of 20 to 30.
There might be situation when you have to change gear directly from four to two .E.g suddenly a speed breaker comes. So you have to change gear from 5 or 4 to 2 .You apply the club (clutch brake combination) / release the brake / change the gear to 2 / release the clutch . Move and cross the speed breaker.
Think of what possible gear changes are possible. 1 to 2 , 2 to 3 , 3 to 4 , 4 to 5 , 5 to 1 , 5 to 2 , 4 to 1 , 4 to 2 etc. E.g.  1 to 4 is not possible.This will damage your engine.

Day 4
To get more expertise on steering control .Move your vehicle in  zig zag way at low speeds e.g. gear 2  inside a open field.
To get even more expertise on steering control. Move your vehicle in  zig zag way  till steering lock at gear 2 inside a open field.Steer to right till steering lock and then steer to left till steering lock and so on .Repeat this exercise for 20 times.
While taking reverse gear you should not be wearing seat belt .You should be aware of position of your front tyres.Your driver window should be open.
Change gear to reverse .Move slowly backwards . If you want to move your vehicle right in backward direction then you have to move your steering right  and vice versa.
Being in learner stage ,  I did it slowly.
Application of using reverse gear.I had a dead end ahead and a left side road . I had to take U turn.Moved ahead , took left .Take reverse and take right .While taking reverse to right , you should be closer to right side of road and that will help in you doing reverse to right.Change to first gear and move ahead.
You are on up hill and you have to start the engine .Same things hand brake should be in applied position.Press the gas to little. Bring your clutch to biting point. Release the hand brake .Your vehicle will in moving forward.
Downhill slow movement (for beginners only). Brake and release. in gear 1 or 2 or neutral  gear .Expert car drivers might do the same thing at high speeds.

Day 5
While taking U turn , you should have stopped your car close to divider in a slant position to right  if you are moving to right.Slowly move to other lane in gear 1  not to the lane close to divider , controlling the steer and bringing your car straight .
To get more perfect in steering control , go to an open ground  that would be good if it has two walls or trees seperated by some distance .So you can move around them making 8 at a speed of 10 to 30 .Don't do this at greater speeds as you are a beginner.
Thats also one tip for the day that before taking a turn , you should have decided that you are going to move left or right .It should not happen that you started moving left and at once it came to your mind that you are going wrong and immediately you started moving to right. This is about knowing the roads. Its better to have clear picture of the way where you are going.

Day 6
Angular parking is  about parking your vehicle in the right position .While taking off the vehicle , taking straight reverse and then taking reverse left or right based on situation and moving ahead.
Blind spots are the junctions where there is no visibility to coming vehicles .At such junctions drivers have to extremely cautious .He should use the horn , move at low speeds and be alert to coming vehicles on the road.
Cross roads have signals and we should follow the signals.
Driving is not just only about driving vehicle but its also about the alertness of driver.A driver should try to have clear visibility of what all happening is around the vehicle. For that he should also make use of rear view mirrors, side mirrors .His front visibility should be a broad and upto maximum distance.
Driver should be observing engine sounds and as well as understanding them.

Day 7
Technique of entering into traffic congested road  is bringing the vehicle to gear 1.Bringing the clutch to biting point .Then taking the brake / releasing the brake repeated several times with  proper steer control.
Horn should be used at blind spots , to alert a person , animal  and a vehicle moving ahead of you coming in your way or just to alert them.Avoid using too much of horn.In order to use horn effectively your hands should be on quarter to 3 position on steer on the middle rod.So that you can just use your thumbs to press horn.Otherwise you have to take your hands from the steer and then press horn which will add a time delay.
Using vipers, horn , left/turn signal lights effectively depends on your hand position on the steering .So your hands should be on the steer at quarter to three position otherwise there will be time delay.
Don't  push acclearator while taking curve.Beginners should not acclerate much while taking curve.
Here is the time to practice more on changing gears. After you are in car and have started the car , you can't just move in gear 1 so, you should keep on changing gears and increasing the speed of car till your maximum comfort zone. Start the car , acclerate a little , change from gear 1  to 2, acclerate a little , change from  gear 2 to 3 , acclerate a little change from gear 3 to 4 and so on.
Parallel parking is about parking your vehicle rightly behind the front car  in such a way that you can see the rear tyres of front car while sitting in your car .It involves right amount of steering , a little reverse may be required , and stopping your vehicle at the right position.
If you have reached at  steering lock position  then two turns back will  get you to straight position.
Application of using reverse gear.I had a dead end ahead and a right side road . I had to take U turn.Move ahead , take right .Take reverse and take left .While taking reverse to left , you should be closer to left side of road and that will help in you doing reverse to left, change to first gear and move ahead.
Day 8
Instructor tried to focus on my weak points
Mixing the gear 1 while starting the vehicle with little acclerator(gas).
Applying the club while taking U turn on a busy road close to divider in slant position and then changing gear to 1.
Day 9
Instructor focused on my weak points
Entering into congested rod  and while taking U turn ..be prepared in gear 1 biting position ..observe the sound , take and release the brake..take and release the brake otherwise if there is no traffic , take a little acclerator and go.

Day 10
Head Lights are of two types - high beam and low beam.High beam head lights are used on highways i.e where traffic is less and you want to have long vision . Low beam are used wherever the traffic is more.Low beam are the ordinary headlights and are used inside the city, foggy conditions etc.

While overtaking the vehicle , you should have looked if something is coming when you are on a single lane road.Otherwise on a double lane road , you can easily overtake the ahead vehicle from the right side of the vehicle.Overtaking the vehicle from the left side is considered to be wrong.Overtaking the vehicle from left side can only be done when you are sure that ahead moving vehicle is aware of that.

Day 11
Driving on a uphill -
1.Stop at a stop light or sign while going uphill.
2.Engage your emergency brake (Also known as hand brake or parking brake)
3.Step on the clutch with your left foot, put the car in first gear and use your right foot for the gas when it is time to start again. You don't need a foot on the brake since the emergency brake will hold your car in place.
4.Press down lightly on the gas while you start to raise the clutch.
5.Release the emergency brake as soon as you feel the car start to grab and move forward.
6.Continue to accelerate and completely release the clutch.
7.Practice driving uphill from a red light or stop sign. Once you're more experienced, you will be able to quickly shift your foot from brake to gas when taking off and won't have to use the emergency brake.

To summarise , important driving techniques to be learned are

1.Leaving the clutch pedal smoothly while starting to move the car.

2.Press clutch and brake , Move to gear to first .Slowly release the clutch till biting point.Quickly shift the right foot from brake to little gas ( used while driving uphill ).

3.Putting the clutch to biting point and taking your right foot on brake .Releasing it whenever required (While entering on traffic congested road , U turn , left and right turns , parking etc.)

4.Applying brake at correct distance from the next vehicle in front. This distance increases with the car speed. Also be careful about the behind moving vehicles while applying sudden brakes. So they don't hit the back of your car.

5.Making use of rear view mirrors, horn, side view mirrors, left and right indicators , warning indicators that indicate whether handbrake is applied, fuel is less , engine oil needs to be changed etc.

6.Overtaking the next moving vehicle in front.

7.Giving side to behind moving vehicles if they want to move ahead of you.

8.Reversing the car

Few other points to consider are
Keep good distance between your car and the vehicles parked along the road.As anybody can open the door anytime and hit your car.
Don't look at headlights of other vehicles while driving at night.
Learn dipping of headlights while driving on highways.
While turning , put some distance between your vehicle and the obstructiions.
Drive very slowly on narrow roads.
While stopping your vehicle near to steep speed breakers, either cross them or stop a little distance  before the breakers.
Practice changing  gear to third as this can be little difficult for beginners.
Give the turning signals a little before you turn.
Do not drive with clutch pressed.
Do not be too close to the divider while taking a U turn.
Honking may be good sometimes to alert the rickshawallas, auto drivers , tempos etc. who drive recklessly.

Master the art of changing gears at the right speed.
Driving is all about seeing , thinking and doing .This thinking factor reduces to micro seconds as you keep on driving.Thumb Rule for beginners is to drive slowly .Gradually they can increase their speed when they feel comfortable to do so.
